But why a "lake?" The image of water - particularly "the sea" is used metaphorically right throughout the Scriptures to symbolize the writhing mass of "humanity."  Not only that, but parabolically speaking, the "sea" is the "proving" or "testing ground" of man's spiritual progression. It is by the unusual means of this particular body of water "mingled with fire" that  "the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters covers the sea" (Hab 2:14)...read study notes
Few Christians understand that the symbols strewn throughout the Book of Revelation have their origins in the Old Testament Scriptures. Symbols as recognizable as "the four horsemen of the apocalypse," "the lampstand," "the four living creatures," "the edible scroll"  and many others are easily recognizable to those who know where to look for them.  As we know, the symbol of the "The lake of fire" is likewise hidden within the parabolic construct of the Old Testament.
